Cloth-backed marbled boards, 8.75 x 9 inches. 248 manuscript numbered pages, 3 additional pages of illustrations at rear, including (1) ornamental borders, (1) hatching patterns for soil, etc, and (1) topographical distinctions in color. Written on variously toned paper stock and bound together. Signed by Joseph Lafay with the completion date noted August 12, 1861. Very good with soil primarily to the endpapers, obscuring some faint pencil text on the rear pastedown. Some abrasion to exterior; binding tight. A practical course in surveying which includes instruction in descriptive geometry, mensuration, physical geography, and drafting. Coverage of tools and materials includes a survey of color pigments, choosing brushes, etc. Also covers legal aspects of the profession and provides form models for writing expert reports. Not overly ornamental, but peppered with diagrams and drawings that run the gamut from refined to naive. Pleasing work, indeed.
