  Match the floral repeat before cutting

  The large-scale floral jacquard has a visible repeat. For garments with multiple panels — lehenga skirt, anarkali flare — lay out all pieces before cutting and align the motif repeat consistently across panels. Add 10–15% extra yardage when working with large-repeat brocade for pattern matching.

  Use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

  Jacquard brocade has a structured weave that can shift under cutting pressure. Use very sharp scissors or a rotary cutter with a firm cutting mat. Pin generously before cutting, especially along diagonal cuts or curved hem lines.

  Finish all raw edges immediately

  Brocade — especially with zari floats — frays significantly at cut edges. Serge or overlock all raw edges immediately after cutting. If no serger is available, use a tight zigzag stitch along each edge before any other stitching.

  Needle size and thread

  Use a sharp or microtex needle (size 80/12 or 90/14) with a polyester thread in a tone that matches the dominant colour of the fabric. Avoid hand-sewing through the zari sections where possible — needle holes in metallic zari thread are visible and may weaken the float.

  Seam allowances

  Use a seam allowance of at least 1.5 cm (5/8 inch) for this fabric. Press seams open using a pressing cloth. Do not press directly onto the zari face of the fabric.

Care Instructions

  Washing

  Hand wash gently in cold water with very mild detergent. Or dry clean for best preservation of the zari lustre. Machine washing is not recommended — the jacquard weave and zari floats can snag or distort in a machine drum.

  Drying

  Lay flat in shade or hang carefully on a padded hanger. Do not wring, twist, or tumble dry. Keep away from direct sunlight during drying to prevent any differential fading between the two tones.

  Ironing

  Iron on the reverse side only, using a dry iron on low-to-medium heat with a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. Never iron directly on the zari face — direct heat will flatten the metallic sheen and may melt the zari thread irreversibly.

  Storage

  Fold loosely with acid-free tissue paper between layers to prevent zari tarnishing and avoid permanent crease lines in the brocade. Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture, direct sunlight, and mothballs (which can discolour metallic threads).

✦ Never iron directly on the zari face — this will permanently flatten and dull the metallic sheen. Always use a pressing cloth on the reverse side. Machine washing is not recommended for garments made from this fabric. For special occasion garments, dry cleaning is the safest care option.
