Dual Tone ✦ Zari Work Multiple Shades

M'Foks Banarasi Inspired Brocade is a dual-tone zari floral jacquard fabric that draws directly from the visual vocabulary of Banarasi silk — the raised floral motifs, the zari shimmer, the layered colour depth — and reinterprets it in a durable, lower-maintenance polyester base that brings Banarasi-style richness within everyday reach. The jacquard loom weaves a large-scale floral pattern into the fabric structure using two complementary tones and metallic zari thread, creating a woven design that shifts in appearance as light catches the fabric from different angles.

The dual-tone construction is the defining quality of this fabric. The base and the motif are woven in two distinct, carefully selected colours — giving every piece a built-in tonal contrast that reads as considered and rich without requiring any embellishment. The zari floats across the floral design add a metallic accent that catches light in daylight and under artificial lighting equally, making this fabric ideal for evening events, festive occasions, and any setting where the garment is meant to be seen.

At approximately 150 grams per metre across a 44-inch width, this is a mid-to-heavy weight brocade — structured and substantial, with a body that supports lehenga skirts, kurta bodies, and designer dress panels without needing a stiff inner lining. The weight also means the fabric drapes with gravitas — it does not flutter or collapse but holds its shape through the full length of a garment. Available in multiple shade combinations — each pairing a different base and motif tone — the full shade range is shown in the product images above.

Common Questions

What garments is this fabric best suited for?

Womenswear: lehenga skirt, lehenga blouse, designer dress, anarkali, A-line kurta, kurta top, festive salwar suit. Menswear: sherwani outer layer, bandhgala coat, indo-western jacket, formal kurta. The fabric's weight and structure make it especially well suited for garments where the fabric itself is the centrepiece — minimal embellishment required.

What does "dual tone" mean in this fabric?

Dual tone means the fabric uses two distinct yarn colours in the jacquard weave — one for the base ground and one for the floral motif. This creates a tonal contrast where the design appears lighter or darker than the base depending on the angle of light. In Banarasi weaving, this is called "rangkat" construction. The zari thread adds a third metallic dimension to the motif, creating a three-layered visual effect.

Is the zari real metal or synthetic?

The zari thread used is metallic polyester zari — synthetic zari that closely replicates the appearance of traditional gold or silver zari at a fraction of the cost. It does not tarnish over time the way real metallic zari can, and it maintains its lustre through regular gentle washing. It is woven directly into the fabric and will not peel, shed, or detach with normal use and care.

Does this fabric need a lining?

Not necessarily. At 150 GSM, the fabric has enough body to stand on its own for kurtas, tops, and structured dress panels. For lehenga skirts or garments where additional volume or opacity is desired, a lightweight lining (cotton voile, china silk, or polyester lining fabric) can be added. The fabric is not sheer — there is no transparency concern when worn without a lining.

How many metres do I need?

Lehenga skirt: 3–4 metres. Lehenga blouse: 0.75–1 metre. Designer dress (midi): 2.5–3 metres. Women's kurta top (hip length): 2–2.5 metres. Anarkali (full length): 3–4 metres. Men's sherwani body: 3.5–4 metres. Men's bandhgala/jacket: 2–2.5 metres. Add 10% for pattern repeat matching across seams.

Can I mix this fabric with plain or embroidered fabric in the same outfit?

Yes — and this is a very common construction for lehenga sets. Use this brocade for the skirt body and cut the blouse from a matching plain polyester silk or satin in one of the dual-tone colours for a coordinated, high-end result. Alternatively, combine with embroidered net or organza as an overlay for a layered festive look.

Stitching Tips & Care

Cutting & Stitching Tips

  • 1
Match the floral repeat before cutting

The large-scale floral jacquard has a visible repeat. For garments with multiple panels — lehenga skirt, anarkali flare — lay out all pieces before cutting and align the motif repeat consistently across panels. Add 10–15% extra yardage when working with large-repeat brocade for pattern matching.

  • 2
Use sharp fabric scissors or a rotary cutter

Jacquard brocade has a structured weave that can shift under cutting pressure. Use very sharp scissors or a rotary cutter with a firm cutting mat. Pin generously before cutting, especially along diagonal cuts or curved hem lines.

  • 3
    Finish all raw edges immediately

Brocade — especially with zari floats — frays significantly at cut edges. Serge or overlock all raw edges immediately after cutting. If no serger is available, use a tight zigzag stitch along each edge before any other stitching.

  • 4
    Needle size and thread

Use a sharp or microtex needle (size 80/12 or 90/14) with a polyester thread in a tone that matches the dominant colour of the fabric. Avoid hand-sewing through the zari sections where possible — needle holes in metallic zari thread are visible and may weaken the float.

  • 5
    Seam allowances

Use a seam allowance of at least 1.5 cm (5/8 inch) for this fabric. Press seams open using a pressing cloth. Do not press directly onto the zari face of the fabric.

Care Instructions

  • Washing

Hand wash gently in cold water with very mild detergent. Or dry clean for best preservation of the zari lustre. Machine washing is not recommended — the jacquard weave and zari floats can snag or distort in a machine drum.

  • Drying

Lay flat in shade or hang carefully on a padded hanger. Do not wring, twist, or tumble dry. Keep away from direct sunlight during drying to prevent any differential fading between the two tones.

  • Ironing

Iron on the reverse side only, using a dry iron on low-to-medium heat with a pressing cloth between the iron and fabric. Never iron directly on the zari face — direct heat will flatten the metallic sheen and may melt the zari thread irreversibly.

  • Storage

Fold loosely with acid-free tissue paper between layers to prevent zari tarnishing and avoid permanent crease lines in the brocade. Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture, direct sunlight, and mothballs (which can discolour metallic threads).

✦ Never iron directly on the zari face — this will permanently flatten and dull the metallic sheen. Always use a pressing cloth on the reverse side. Machine washing is not recommended for garments made from this fabric. For special occasion garments, dry cleaning is the safest care option.
