While the shelves are rated at 175kg/385lb each, we would say that 80-100kg per shelf is a more sensible rating limit. The theory behind keeping the shelves to 5mm thick is to keep the overall package weight around 20-25 kg thus allowing courier delivery and crucially allowing easier movement should you decide to move it around once assembled. Reviews elsewhere mention how MDF shelves can be prone to moisture damage. You can buy mdf paint /sealant cheaply enough - if required. If the unit is kept in perfectly dry indoor conditions then sealant will not be required.....
