Hans Gehrig (1929–1989) was a Swiss-trained silversmith who became a prominent figure in Canada's modernist jewelry movement. He established himself as a studio jeweler in Montreal around 1960, crafting handwrought pieces that exemplify the modernist aesthetic. He notably worked in partnership with acclaimed modernist jewelry artist Walter Schluep from 1960 to 1964. His designs are characterized by clean lines, minimalist forms, and a sculptural quality that reflects the principles of modernist design. Gehrig also played a formative role in mentoring other artists, including noted Canadian jeweler George Brooks, whom he taught silver forging techniques. He also co-founded the Montreal Gem and Mineral Club. His pieces remain highly collectible for their craftsmanship, aesthetic strength, and place in mid-century Canadian design history.
