Rega RB3000 Tonearm

The RB3000 is Rega's reference-class tonearm — the arm fitted as standard to the Planar 10, and available separately for those fitting a reference-grade arm to a compatible turntable. It is meticulously hand-built by Rega's most experienced technicians, and it represents the point in the range where engineering decisions that would be impractical at lower prices become the norm: interference-fit hand-selected bearings, a hand-polished arm tube, and a construction that uses no adhesive at any point.

That last detail is worth dwelling on. The RB3000 contains no adhesive of any kind in its assembly. The tolerances throughout the arm are tight enough that mechanical joints hold without bonding agents. Where adhesive might be used to make assembly faster or more forgiving, Rega instead specifies tighter machining and more careful manual fitting. It is a statement of intent about the level of engineering that has gone into the arm.

Where the RB3000 Sits in the Rega Range

The RB3000 sits above the RB880 and below the RB Titanium in the five-arm standalone range.

The step up from the RB880 is principally about bearing precision. The RB880 features hand-matched bearing assemblies — sets of bearings selected to work well together. The RB3000 goes further: each bearing is individually hand-selected to be an interference fit with its paired spindle, matching both the inside and outside diameters to tolerances that are measured in microns. This matching process is time-intensive and cannot be automated. It is the reason the RB3000's bearings achieve the level of freedom from play that they do.

The arm tube is hand-polished rather than machined to a standard finish. Polishing removes microscopic surface irregularities that can create stress points, increasing the stiffness-to-weight ratio of the tube and reducing stress on the bearing assemblies. The result is a lighter arm tube that is also more rigid — not as a compromise, but because the two outcomes are genuinely compatible when enough care is applied.

Above the RB3000 sits the RB Titanium, which introduces titanium and tungsten to the construction. The RB3000 uses the same bearing-matching philosophy but with conventional materials; the RB Titanium extends that philosophy into material choices that are inherently more demanding to machine and work with.

Sound and Performance

The no-adhesive construction is not an audiophile flourish — it has a direct engineering basis. Adhesives, even high-quality ones, can absorb and return energy at frequencies that fall within the audio band. By eliminating them entirely, Rega removes a class of micro-resonance from the arm's behaviour. The bearing assemblies, with no mechanical play and no friction, allow the stylus to track without the arm imposing any lateral or vertical resistance on its movement.

At this level of construction, the differences from the arm below it are not dramatic. They are precise. A quieter noise floor. More stable imaging. Better resolution of low-level detail — the fine information in a record groove that separates a correct performance from an approximate one. The hand-polished arm tube contributes to this: a tube with no stress concentrations and minimal mass stores less energy, and what it stores, it dissipates rather than returns.

The RB3000 is designed for listeners running high-grade moving coil cartridges — the Nd9, the Rega Apheta 3, or equivalent-quality cartridges from other manufacturers. At this level of arm, the cartridge is the primary variable; the arm will not restrict it.

Build Quality and Design

The RB3000 is hand-built in Southend-on-Sea by Rega's most experienced tonearm technicians. Each arm is individually assembled: the bearing selection, spindle matching, and tube polishing cannot be delegated to a production line. The vertical bearing assembly has been designed specifically for this arm, contributing to the stability and precision of the horizontal and vertical bearing action.

The arm includes Rega's low-capacitance phono cable, designed to preserve signal integrity from the cartridge output to the phono stage. As with all Rega arms, it ships ready for the standard three-point Rega mount. Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.

Connectivity and System Matching

The RB3000 uses Rega's standard three-point mounting with a 222mm pivot-to-spindle distance. It is the standard arm on the Planar 10 and is compatible with any Rega-mount turntable at the right specification. For those fitting the RB3000 to a non-Rega turntable, confirm the pivot-to-spindle distance and three-point hole pattern before ordering.

At this level, cartridge choice should be approached carefully. The Nd9 is the high-end moving magnet option; beyond that, the arm is designed for moving coil use. The Rega Apheta 3 is a natural match — an MC cartridge designed by the same team, at a level of refinement that the RB3000 will resolve properly. The Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the corresponding phono stage, and the combination of RB3000, Apheta 3, and AOS MC is a reference-level analogue front end.

Dave or Chris at Martin's can advise on cartridge and phono stage matching for your specific system — at this price point, getting those decisions right is worth a conversation.

Who Is It For?

The RB3000 is for the serious analogue listener running a Planar 10 or a reference-grade compatible turntable, and for those pairing a high-quality MC cartridge with an arm that will not hold it back. It is not the right choice for a mid-level system; the arm rewards properly matched cartridges and phono stages. Listeners who want to go further still should look at the RB Titanium, which extends the same engineering philosophy into more exotic materials.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The RB3000 is available to order through our Norwich showroom; call ahead and Dave or Chris will advise on the right cartridge and phono stage combination for your turntable. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to experienced hi-fi specialists who understand this level of the Rega range and can help you get the best from it.

Reach them at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
