A Medical Miscellany for Genealogists. Dr. Jeanette L. Jerger. Paperback, (1995), 2006, 5½x8½, alphabetical, 186 pp.
When the author of this book was unsure how to understand a pension record reference to her great-grandfather being salivated during the Civil War, she had to do her own research. After exploring old medical resources she came up with the idea for a book that would provide information to clarify obscure or obsolete medically-related terms and concepts likely to be encountered by genealogical researchers. Formatted like a dictionary, the terms are listed in alphabetical order and cross-referenced when necessary. Dr. Jerger also included terms related to myth and magic as they weave in and out of the healing arts. European, Asian, African, and Native American folk wisdom further complements the more mainstream medical terminology.
