The Brio has been in continuous production since 1991 — a 35-year lineage of integrated amplifier development that has produced seven generations of refinement. The MK7 is the most advanced Brio yet: a comprehensively re-engineered amplifier with a re-laid circuit board, expanded digital connectivity, an improved headphone implementation, and a measured THD+noise figure of approximately 0.005% at 1kHz. It delivers 50 watts per channel into 8 ohms and 73 watts into 6 ohms.
The Brio MK7 is described by Rega as "a masterclass in dynamics." That is not marketing language — it describes something real. The Brio has always had a rhythmic authority that belies its rated power and its price, and the MK7 brings that quality to a more revealing circuit with more connectivity than any previous generation.
The Brio MK7 sits above the io and below the Elex MK4 in the Rega amplifier range.
The step up from the io is meaningful on several counts. The Brio adds a third line-level input, two digital inputs (optical and coaxial), an onboard DAC, 20 additional watts per channel, and a more refined headphone output. For anyone connecting a streamer, a TV, or a digital source, the Brio is the right starting point — the io does not have digital inputs at all.
Above the Brio, the Elex MK4 adds a fourth line-level input, pre-amplifier and record outputs, and 22 more watts per channel. The step to the Elex makes sense for listeners who want to integrate a more complex system — a tape deck, a second amplifier zone, or a higher-powered drive for demanding speakers. For most listeners at this level, the Brio has everything required.
The circuit re-lay is the most significant technical change in the MK7. By rerouting the signal path on the circuit board, Rega's engineers have reduced interference between stages and shortened signal paths — both of which contribute to the lower distortion figure. The result is a cleaner, more detailed presentation than earlier Brio generations, while retaining the rhythmic directness that distinguishes Rega amplifiers from their competitors.
The 50-watt rating into 8 ohms, rising to 73 watts into 6 ohms, is more capable than it appears on paper. Rega amplifiers characteristically have a headroom and dynamic authority that makes them sound more powerful than the numbers suggest — partly a function of the power supply design, and partly the result of circuit topologies optimised for musical dynamics rather than steady-state output.
The MM phono stage is the same DNA as the standalone Rega Fono — designed to work naturally with Rega's cartridge range. The onboard DAC handles up to 192kHz on its coaxial and optical inputs, making it genuinely capable with high-resolution digital sources. The headphone output, improved in the MK7, provides a credible standalone listening experience rather than an afterthought.
The Brio MK7 uses a half-width aluminium chassis — 216mm wide — which makes it a natural partner for a compact system or a neat shelf installation. At 79mm tall and 365mm deep, it occupies a smaller footprint than most integrated amplifiers while looking purposeful rather than cramped.
At 4.9kg it has the weight you would expect from an amplifier with a proper linear power supply. The build quality is consistent with Rega's Southend-on-Sea manufacturing standards: well-assembled, with quality internal components including polypropylene capacitors, and well-considered front-panel ergonomics. The short-circuit and thermal protection ensure the amplifier will manage speaker faults or difficult loads without damage. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.
The Brio MK7 provides one MM phono input, three line-level RCA inputs, and two digital inputs (S/PDIF coaxial and optical Toslink, both accepting up to 192kHz). A front-panel headphone socket handles personal listening. There are no pre-amplifier or record outputs — the Brio is a self-contained integrated amplifier.
The auto-standby function means the Brio draws minimal power when not in use without requiring manual switching.
At this level, the natural turntable partners are the Rega Planar 2 and Planar 3, both directly compatible with the onboard MM phono stage. The digital inputs make the Brio a natural partner for a network streamer or a CD player. For listeners who want to add a moving coil cartridge later, an external phono stage such as the Rega AOS MC can occupy one of the three line-level inputs.
Speaker choice matters at 50 watts. Speakers of 87dB sensitivity or above give the Brio the headroom to perform well dynamically; below that, the amplifier will work harder and clip earlier at higher volumes. Well-matched bookshelf or standmount speakers from Rega, Wharfedale, or Q Acoustics are the natural pairing at this level.

The Brio MK7 is for the listener who wants the full Rega amplifier experience — phono stage, DAC, and meaningful power — in a compact format at a realistic price. It suits a Planar 2 or Planar 3 owner who also connects a streamer or digital source, and it rewards efficient to moderately demanding speakers. Those who need a fourth line-level input, pre-amplifier outputs, or more power should look at the Elex MK4.
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The Brio MK7 is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a matching Rega source and speakers. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can advise on whether the Brio MK7 or a step up in the range is right for your room and your system.
Reach them at [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
