Product Description Three Musical Brothers - on record together for the first time! 11 Magical Tracks, plus an exclusive 25-minute Behind-The-Scenes documentary DVD on the session. In the 90's, iconic drummer Jack DeJohnette suggested to John Patitucci and Danilo Perez that they meet and play together. The pairing of Patitucci and Perez went on to be a major force in the jazz of the last decade plus. Now, for the first time on record, Jack DeJohnette is joined by the master duo that he helped to create - on the brilliant MUSIC WE ARE An intensely musical meeting of the minds - the recording finds Jack at the height of his creative and musical powers. Recorded during a snow storm near DeJohnette's home in the Catskills in New York, Music We Are captures the trio's unparalleled connection, improvisational compositions, and as DeJohnette explains, "a process of connecting in the studio and collectively following what made the most sense in a given moment" to deliver a musical statement of profound depth and remarkable range. MUSIC WE ARE, produced by DeJohnette/Patitucci/Perez, combines strictly composed pieces, organically developed in the studio by the trio, with spacious collective improvisations to showcase the three virtuosos performing double-duty: DeJohnette on drums and melodica; Patitucci on upright and electric basses; and Perez on piano and Fender Rhodes. Vinyl Edition available May 19, 2009. From the Artist "I think it presents a fresh way of looking at the piano trio setting," says DeJohnette. "It's more than just us sitting down and playing some tunes, it's more collaborative and you really get that collective feeling. There's space for everybody to shine on this record." Adds Perez, "I really appreciate and enjoy and respect the amount of input that each one of us can bring to the table in this trio. Jack really comes from that Miles Davis legacy where the door is always open to experimenting. He definitely leaves a wonderful amount of room for us." Of making the album, DeJohnette says, "it's not about showing off chops or boosting our egos, it's about putting those egos together to make a unified statement, a collective statement." As Patitucci explains, "We wanted to make sure that we had some open spaces for free compositions because whenever we've played together the music is very pliable and very elastic and can go in a lot of different directions. Jack is so great at inspiring that kind of thing, and Danilo and I love to do that anyway." The DeJohnette/Patitucci/Perez trio made its formal premiere at the 2005 Panama Jazz Festival, where Danilo still presides as its artistic director. "We did two concerts in Panama that year," Perez recalls, "and we left with the feeling of, `Yeah! We gotta do this again sometime.'" Nearly three years later, they were finally able to document their special chemistry together in the studio. Music We Are is an album mixed of strictly composed pieces organically developed, like DeJohnette's "Tango African" and Perez's "White," and spacious, collective improvisations ("Earth Prayer" and "Earth Speaks"). "The degree of confidence and trust in this trio is really incredible," adds Perez. "And we were laughing a lot during this session because we were constantly surprising each other with what we came up with in the moment. We had no expectation, nothing was forced and we were surprised when he heard the playbacks. I'm still surprised when I listen to this recording. There definitely was a lot of grownup children stuff going on during this session. That's the magic that somebody like Jack can set up immediately. And you just have to tune into that energy and the gravity of what it is to make it really happen." About the Artist It was 13 years ago that 2009 Grammy Award Winner Jack DeJohnette first floated the notion of one day playing with bassist John Patitucci and pianist Danilo Perez. That idea finally comes to fruition on April 7, 2009, on Music We Are, an adventurous and remarkably harmonious trio project for Jack DeJohnette's Golden Beams Productions label. DeJohnette and Patitucci had first played together with pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba at the 1991 Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival (captured on the Blue Note recording, Images). Jack says his chemistry with John was immediate. "It was fantastic," he recalls. "He and I just hooked up right away because John has a way of anchoring the music but also freeing it up at the same time. And he commented that he felt really free and relaxed playing with me, like he could take chances and do things." Then in 1992, DeJohnette played together with Perez for the first time on the pianist's self-titled debut for RCA Novus. When DeJohnette and Patitucci reunited a few years later, on a 1996 session led by Hong Kong jazz guitarist Eugene Pao (By The Company You Keep, Somethin' Else Records), Jack said to John, "you should hook up with Danilo Perez. I think you two would really work great together." "Jack is the one
