Founded by Herb Gallen in 1949, Ellen Tracy was originally a manufacturer of blouses. In 1962, Gallen hired recent college graduate Linda Allard as a design assistant. Two years later, Allard was named Director of Design and moved the brand into sportswear. A new Ellen Tracy began to evolve. Tracing the rise of the career women, in 1975, as the firm's junior customers were entering the workforce, Ellen Tracy made a milestone move into contemporary departments.  Over the years Ellen Tracy has become synonymous with exclusive, high-quality fabrics, unique color stories, and the concept of the total wardrobe for the working woman.
