James Suckling 97, This is very classy, with fantastic length and depth and wonderfully polished tannins. It’s full-bodied, yet so long and attractive. Complex wine with dark fruit, fresh mushrooms and polished tannins. It goes on for minutes. This illustrates a new direction for Numanthia, with more class and focus. Drink after 2026.

Parker-Gutiérrez 94 Punkte: 

I tasted the 2018 Numanthia next to the 2017, two vintages with similar parameters—15% alcohol and a pH of 3.75—and both fermented in stainless steel with selected yeasts and matured in 225- and 400-liter barrels (60% new) for 18 months. Here, they started the change, using some stems for the vinification and maturing part of the wine in foudre. It's still powerful, concentrated and ripe but with good balance, integrated oak and abundant, fine-grained tannins. 2018 delivered a good crop, the warm summer brought high ripeness too, and they discarded some 17% of the grapes in the sorting table. The work paid off, and the wine is textured and has gentler tannins and a structured and elegant mouthfeel. 86,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2020. This has to be one of the finest vintages of recent years.

Numanthia, bought by LVMH in 2008, started the transformation of their wines eight years ago, harvesting earlier, doing less extraction and using less new oak and larger barrels and vats. At the same time, they decided to release the wines with more time in bottle—Numanthia five years after the harvest and Termanthia seven. They have obtained organic certification for their over 100 hectares of vineyards and are in the process of certifying their main external suppliers. They produce 220,000 bottles. The wines are still powerful, ripe and concentrated but with better-integrated oak and more harmony than in the past.
