Die Walther Collection zählt zu den weltweit renommiertesten Sammlungen globaler Fotografie. INTO THE UNSEEN ist die letzte große Präsentation der Sammlung in Europa, bevor 6.500 Werke als Schenkung an das Metropolitan Museum of Art nach New York gehen. Die Ausstellung entwirft entlang künstlerischer Arbeiten und Alltagsfotografien, die Spiritualität, Trauma, Transformation und multisensorische Wahrnehmung fokussieren, eine Poetik des Ungesehenen.

Mit Werken von u.a. Cang Xin, Em’kal Eyongakpa, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Santu Mofokeng, Eadweard Muybridge, Jo Ractliffe, RongRong, Berni Searle und Yang Fudong. Zur Ausstellung entstehen eine neue Soundarbeit des Fotografen Felipe Romero Beltrán und eine neue Fotoinstallation der Künstlerin Ana María Gómez López.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert zeitgenössische künstlerische Arbeiten, historische Werke und Alltagsfotografien, die das Feld des Sichtbaren überschreiten, und gliedert sich in vier multisensorische Kapitel. Die vielfältigen Sinnesregister der Fotografie aktivierend, lädt INTO THE UNSEEN dazu ein, die hörbaren, taktilen und affektiven Register der Fotografie anzuerkennen.

Die Ausstellung untersucht, was es bedeuten würde, die Fotografie als ein Medium zu verstehen, das alle unsere Sinne anregt - vom haptischen (Berührung) über den akustischen (Klang) bis hin zum olfaktorischen (Geruch) und gustatorischen (Geschmack). Anstatt die Fotografie als ein Werkzeug der Kategorisierung zu verstehen, als eine Modalität zur Erfassung des Realen oder des Wahren, überwinden die in dieser Ausstellung gezeigten Arbeiten die Grenzen zwischen dem Sichtbaren und dem Unsichtbaren, dem Geistigen und dem Körperlichen, dem Stummen und dem Hörbaren, dem Erinnern, dem Imaginierten und dem Verdrängten.

Die Ausstellung wird von Nadine Isabelle Henrich, Kuratorin des Hauses der Photograpie, und Prof. Tina M. Campt, Historikerin und Roger S. Berlind Professor of Humanities an der Princeton University, kuratiert und wurde im Dialog mit Artur Walther entwickelt.

THE WALTHER COLLECTION is considered one of the world’s most renowned collections of global photography. INTO THE UNSEEN marks the final major presentation of the collection in Europe before 6,500 works are gifted to THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART in New York. The exhibition unfolds a poetics of the unseen through artistic works and vernacular photographs that focus on spirituality, trauma, transformation, and multisensory perception. 

Featuring works by, among others, Cang Xin, Em’kal Eyongakpa, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Santu Mofokeng, Eadweard Muybridge, Jo Ractliffe, RongRong, Berni Searle, and Yang Fudong, as well as a new sound work by photographer Felipe Romero Beltrán and a new photo installation by artist Ana María Gómez López.

Showcasing work that activates the multiple sensory registers of photography, INTO THE UNSEEN invites us to embrace the audible, tactile, and affective registers of photography by exploring what it would mean to understand photography as a medium that stimulates the full array of our senses – from the haptic (touch) to the sonic (sound) to the olfactory (smell) and the gustatory (taste)? Instead of understanding photography as a tool of categorization, a modality for capturing the real or the true, the works shown in this exhibition trouble the lines between the visible and the invisible, the spiritual and the corporeal, the silent and the audible, the remembered, the imagined and the repressed.

Developed in dialogue with Artur Walther, the exhibit is curated by Nadine Isabelle Henrich, Curator of the House of Photography and Prof. Tina M. Campt, Historian and Roger S. Berlind Professor of Humanities at Princeton University.
